Dealing with PCBA Shortages: Alternative Part Selection Tips
PCBA shortages occur - good design planning can keep you moving forward. First, look for drop-in replacement parts - these should have the same packaging, pinout, and electrical specifications. If that's not possible, find functionally equivalent parts so that you can modify the design as early as possible. Use platforms like JLCPCB to see real-time availability of the component during your bill of materials (BOM) generation process.
Datasheet comparison is critical. If you want to avoid having to redesign your entire system at a later date simply because certain components are no longer available through the supply chain, putting enough design flexibility into your design early on will allow you to do so without any major inconvenience. Voltage tolerances, timing requirements, voltage ranges, and footprints must all be the same as specified in your specifications for the components used in your system.
