The ESP32 is superior in the aspect of connectivity, with built-in Bluetooth and wi-fi. It is an exceptional device to use as a gateway for collecting, forwarding and transmitting information without having to use additional hardware. Additionally, the ESP32 has a large ecosystem, allowing for quick models to be deployed.

On the other hand, STM32 microcontrollers focus on reliability, low power, and deterministic performance; normally, they require additional RF Modules (LoRa, Sub-GHz). Depending on the use case, it will give greater real-time control to the gateway and industrial-grade reliability.

In conclusion, the ESP32 is an effective solution for fast, connected gateways, while the STM32 is an effective solution for a complete, robust, long-range unified solution by combining the best of both microcontrollers for efficient long-term operations.
