Most engineers stop at dimensional inspection and call the part done. Spending an extra hour on post processing, though, can meaningfully improve both fatigue life and surface finish without touching the design itself.

Shot peening is one of the highest-return steps you can add. Bombarding the surface with small media induces compressive residual stress, which resists crack initiation under cyclic loading. For steel or aluminum parts in dynamic applications, it is often more cost-effective than bumping up material grade.

For appearance and corrosion resistance, vibratory tumbling followed by a light anodize or conversion coat is a clean workflow. Tumbling knocks off sharp edges and tool marks evenly across complex geometry, and the subsequent coating bonds better to that prepared surface than it would to a freshly machined one.

On additively manufactured parts, heat treatment before any surface finishing is worth prioritizing. Stress relieving after printing stabilizes the microstructure, which makes subsequent machining more predictable and reduces distortion when you remove support material.

None of these steps require specialized equipment you probably do not already have access to. A conversation with your finishing vendor early in the design phase usually surfaces options that fit the budget and the timeline.
