Budget Prototyping for Mechanical Parts That Actually Work
When you're validating a mechanical concept early on, spending money on machined metal parts before you've confirmed the geometry is a good way to burn your budget fast. Start with 3D-printed PLA or PETG for anything that doesn't need to bear real load. Most desktop FDM printers can hold tolerances tight enough to check fits, clearances, and assembly sequences.
For parts that need more structural honesty, cast polyurethane resin using silicone molds pulled from your printed masters. It's a bit messier than printing, but you get isotropic material properties and can prototype short runs of five to ten parts for a fraction of the cost of soft tooling.
When you do need real metal, look at waterjet or laser cut flat stock before reaching for a CNC quote. A lot of brackets, plates, and linkages can be designed around 2D profiles with bent or welded features added afterward. Local fab shops will often run one-off pieces at reasonable rates if your files are clean and your tolerances aren't absurd.
The broader principle is to match your prototyping method to the specific question you're trying to answer. Not every iteration needs to survive a load test. Confirm the concept first, then invest in fidelity.
