PCB Layout Doesn't Start with Routing

A PCB layout usually begins long before the first trace is routed.

The board outline, connector locations, mounting holes, and mechanical constraints define the available space before component placement even starts. A small change to the board shape or connector position can simplify routing, improve component spacing, and reduce unnecessary design compromises.

Routing is often the most visible part of PCB design, but many layout decisions are already made before the first copper trace is drawn.
