Clean STEP Files for Suppliers: Key Tips
Clean STEP files save time and avoid confusion downstream. Suppliers rely on accurate geometry to quote and manufacture parts. Taking a few extra minutes before export can streamline the entire process.
Simplify your model by suppressing threads, small fillets, and other cosmetic features. These details increase file size and can cause translation errors. Use the defeature tool in your CAD software to remove internal cavities and unnecessary complexity.
Always check your units are set to millimeters or inches consistently. Align the coordinate system to a standard orientation like front view. This helps the supplier set up their CAM or inspection programs without manual adjustments.
Ensure all bodies are solid and watertight. Overlapping surfaces or open profiles can create non-manifold geometry that fails to import correctly. Run the check geometry or validation tool in your CAD system before export.
Finally, export with the AP242 or AP203 format for best compatibility across different CAD systems. A brief remark in the file name about the revision or material can also be helpful.
