When choosing seals for high pressure hydraulic systems, the most critical factor is extrusion resistance. At pressures above 3000 psi, the seal must not be forced into the gap between the piston and cylinder. Check the manufacturer's pressure ratings and ensure the seal's hardness and geometry can withstand the system's peak pressure.

Material selection is your next priority. Polyurethane offers excellent wear resistance and high tear strength, making it ideal for heavy-duty applications. For higher temperature or chemical compatibility, use PTFE or HNBR. Avoid standard nitrile rubber above 2000 psi as it tends to extrude and fail quickly.

Pay close attention to clearances. The larger the gap between metal parts, the harder the seal material must be. For dynamic seals, use backup rings to prevent extrusion in high pressure applications. Install with proper lubrication and ensure the groove surface finish is 16 microinches or better to reduce friction and wear.

Finally, verify the seal's compatibility with your hydraulic fluid. Some seals swell or degrade with certain additives. Always test under actual operating conditions before full deployment. A proper seal choice reduces downtime and extends component life.
