Pulley Alignment Without Fancy Tools? Use These Tips

Aligning pulleys and belts is critical for efficiency and longevity, but you don't need expensive laser tools. With a few common items, you can achieve good alignment in minutes.

For parallel alignment, use a straightedge like a metal ruler or a length of string. Lay it across both pulley faces. If it touches evenly, they're aligned. For v-belts, check the grooves.

For angular alignment, place two rulers against the pulley faces. Sight along them; if they converge or diverge, adjust the motor base. A carpenter's square can also help check squareness to the shaft.

Belt tension matters too. Press the belt midway; deflect about one belt thickness per inch of span. Adjust by moving the motor. Tracking: run the belt and adjust the pulley angle slightly to center it.

These methods are accurate enough for most applications. No special tools needed, just careful observation and patience.
