Handling delicate parts like glass, electronics, or polished metals requires an end effector that minimizes stress and avoids damage. The wrong choice can lead to costly scrap or surface defects. The key is matching the end effector's properties to the part's fragility and geometry.

For smooth, non-porous surfaces, vacuum grippers with adjustable suction force are excellent. Use a soft silicone or foam cup to distribute force evenly. For irregular or porous parts, soft grippers with compliant fingers (e.g., from flexible TPU or silicone) conform to the shape, reducing point loads. Consider equipping them with force/torque sensors or a remote center compliance (RCC) device to absorb misalignment.

A common mistake is using stiff metal grippers on brittle parts. Instead, opt for pneumatic soft grippers or electric parallel grippers with force control. For example, handling thin glass sheets often works best with a venturi-based vacuum system that allows quick release and adjustable flow, preventing breakage from sudden pressure changes.

Always test the end effector on actual parts at process speed. Pay attention to acceleration forces, release cycles, and part orientation. A simple addition like compliant padding or low-hysteresis materials can dramatically reduce damage rates. When in doubt, choose a gripper with fine force adjustment over a high-speed option.
