In manufacturing, scrap is costly—material, time, and labor wasted. The simplest fix is inserting quality control checkpoints at critical process steps. Instead of inspecting only at the end, check after each major operation. This catches errors early, preventing further work on already defective parts.

For example, in CNC machining, inspect after roughing but before finishing. If a dimension is off, you can adjust or scrap early—saving finishing cycle time and tool wear. Without this checkpoint, you might finish a non-salvageable part, wasting 30 minutes of machining and a tool insert.

Checkpoints also generate real-time data. Record every measurement; trends reveal tool wear or setup drift before they cause scrap. Over one production run, catching two scrap parts early can reduce scrap rate from 5% to 1%. That’s thousands saved annually.

Implement checkpoints on high-value or complex features first. Measure critical dimensions, not just pass/fail. This practice turns QC from a gatekeeper into a process optimizer. Lower scrap, higher first-pass yield—simple but powerful.
