Fix Binding and Play in DIY Linkages
Binding and excessive play are common headaches in homemade linkage mechanisms. These issues often stem from improper clearances, misaligned pivots, or poor material choices. The key is systematic troubleshooting.
First, check pivot hole clearances. A too-tight fit causes binding, while too loose introduces slop. For most small linkages, a clearance of 0.001 to 0.003 inches per side works well. If holes are tight, ream them slightly. If loose, press in a brass bushing or use a shoulder screw.
Next, ensure all pivot axes are parallel. Even a small angular misalignment can cause the linkage to bind as it moves. Use a square or straightedge to check alignment. For multi-bar linkages, assemble loosely and tighten only after confirming free motion.
Finally, consider lubrication and materials. A thin oil or PTFE spray can dramatically reduce friction. For bearing surfaces, pairing dissimilar metals like brass and steel prevents galling. After adjustments, always cycle the linkage manually before adding power. A smooth arcing motion indicates success.
