Inconel work hardens rapidly and retains heat at the cutting zone, making it one of the toughest materials to machine. To avoid premature tool failure, focus on three key strategies.

First, use sharp inserts with a positive rake geometry. This reduces cutting forces and generates less heat, preventing the material from work hardening ahead of the cut. Second, maintain a constant chip load. Use rigid setups and consistent feed rates to avoid letting the tool rub—rubbing work hardens the surface and dulls the edge quickly.

Third, apply high-pressure coolant (at least 1000 psi) directly at the cutting interface. This flushes chips away and cools the part, reducing thermal cycling that can crack inserts. Using through-coolant toolholders further improves delivery.

These tips won't make Inconel easy, but they will help you hold tolerances and get more parts per edge.
