Aluminum Extrusion: How Dies Shape Profiles
Aluminum extrusion starts with a heated billet. The billet is forced by a ram through a steel die, which has an opening shaped like the desired profile. This is similar to squeezing toothpaste from a tube, but at high pressure and temperature.
The die's geometry determines the cross-section. Solid profiles use a simple opening; hollow profiles require a bridge die with a mandrel to create internal cavities. Die design must account for metal flow to prevent defects like twisting or tearing.
After extrusion, the profile is quenched to set its shape, then stretched to straighten and relieve stress. Finally, it undergoes artificial aging to achieve desired strength. Understanding die design is key to producing consistent, high-quality aluminum profiles.
