Integrated designs shine in performance and compactness, such as in aerospace where every gram matters and subsystems must be tightly coupled.
Consider your production volume. Low volume often favors modular for its ease of customization. High volume can justify the upfront cost of integration for better efficiency. Also, think about repair: a modular pump can be swapped in minutes, while an integrated one might require full disassembly.
In practice, use modular where you expect changes or upgrades, and integrated where you can lock the design and need maximum performance. Many successful designs blend both—a modular chassis with an integrated motor drive. Always evaluate lifecycle costs, not just initial component prices.
