Match Welding Process to Metal Type for Strong Joints
Choosing the right welding process depends on the metal type, thickness, and joint position. Getting it wrong leads to weak joints or excessive spatter. For common carbon steel, MIG (GMAW) with solid wire and a CO2/argon mix works for most jobs. Thin sheet steel benefits from TIG (GTAW) for better control, while stick (SMAW) is ideal for outdoor or rusty conditions.
Aluminum requires TIG with AC current to break up the oxide layer. MIG with pulsed spray transfer also works but demands precise settings. Never use stick welding on aluminum—it produces poor results. For stainless steel, TIG or MIG with appropriate filler metals prevents sensitization. Pulse MIG reduces distortion on thin sections.
Always verify the base metal composition and use the recommended filler metal. Practice on scrap before welding critical parts. For exotic alloys like titanium, TIG with a trailing shield gas is mandatory. Match the process to the metal, and you'll produce reliable, code-quality welds.
