Thread Locking: When to Use Adhesive vs Mechanical
Thread locking adhesives like Loctite 242 are great for applications needing vibration resistance without disassembly. They fill thread gaps and cure anaerobically, providing consistent breakaway torque. Use medium-strength for adjustable fasteners; high-strength for permanent joints.
Mechanical methods like nylon patch or cotter pins offer reliability without chemical cure time. Unlike adhesives, they work on oily threads and can be reused. But they add cost and may reduce clamp load if not properly installed.
Prevailing torque nuts are a third option. They deform elastically to create friction, but performance degrades with multiple uses. For critical safety joints, a new nut is best.
Concrete takeaway: For most assembly lines, medium-strength threadlocker (e.g., Loctite 242) is the most reliable due to consistency and ease of application. Save mechanical locks for high-temp or reusable connections.
