Manual vs CNC Bending: Practical Trade-offs
For low-volume prototypes or repairs, manual press brakes are often faster to set up and more flexible for odd angles. An experienced operator can dial in bend allowances by feel, making it ideal for one-offs where programming time isn't justified.
CNC bending excels in repeatability and complex sequences. It automatically compensates for springback and can handle multi-bend parts without accumulating errors. For production runs over a few dozen pieces, the initial programming cost is quickly offset by reduced scrap and faster cycle times.
The key decision factor is part complexity and volume. Simple bends on short runs often favor manual bending. Parts requiring tight tolerances (+-0.5 mm) or multiple operations benefit from CNC's precision. Always consider setup time: manual takes minutes, CNC may take an hour but then runs continuously.
One practical tip: Use manual bending to validate your flat pattern for small batches, then transfer the proven setup to CNC for larger production. This hybrid approach minimizes risk and optimizes both flexibility and consistency.
