Three Simple Tricks to Grip Slippery Handles

If your tool handles or knobs are too slippery, you don't need expensive replacements. Simple modifications can restore grip using common shop materials.

A knurling tool creates a diamond pattern on metal handles. Clamp the handle in a lathe and run the knurling tool across the surface at low speed with cutting oil. This displaces metal to form raised bumps that provide traction.

For plastic or rubber handles, heat shrink tubing works well. Slide a piece of tubing with a larger diameter than the handle over it, then apply heat from a heat gun. The tubing shrinks tightly, adding a textured, grippy layer. Choose tubing with an adhesive lining for extra security.

Another quick fix is adhesive grip tape, like that used on skateboards or stairs. Cut a strip to length, wrap it around the handle, and press firmly. This gives immediate traction and is easy to replace when worn.
