Select gear ratio: torque vs speed trade-off
When selecting a gear ratio, remember that it's a direct trade-off between torque and speed. A lower gear ratio (e.g., 3:1) increases output speed but reduces torque. A higher ratio (e.g., 10:1) multiplies torque but slows output. This is governed by power conservation: input power equals output power minus efficiency losses.
Start by determining your required output torque or speed. For a lifting application, you need high torque at low speed, so choose a high gear ratio. For a high-speed conveyor, a low ratio is better. Also consider the motor's torque-speed curve; avoid operating near stall or maximum speed.
Check the gearbox's efficiency and maximum input speed. Helical gears are quieter but less efficient than spur gears. Ensure the selected ratio keeps the motor in its efficient range, typically 75-100% of rated speed. Finally, verify the gearbox can handle the peak torque and radial loads from your application.
Prototype if possible, or use software to simulate the system. A common mistake is over- or under-gearing, leading to motor overheating or inadequate performance. Start with the required output and work backward to select a practical gear ratio.
