Picking the Right Screwdriver for Assembly
When assembling mechanical components, the humble screwdriver is often overlooked. Yet using the wrong type can damage fasteners or slow you down. For most assembly work, choose a hardened steel tip that fits the screw head exactly—no slop. A magnetic tip helps, but only on ferrous screws.
For cross-head screws, decide between Phillips and Pozidriv. They look similar but differ in engagement. Pozidriv has extra ribs for better torque transfer without cam-out. If you use a Phillips driver on a Pozidriv screw, you risk slipping and stripping the head.
Hex keys are standard for socket head cap screws. Ball-end drivers allow off-angle access, but use the straight end for final tightening to avoid rounding the socket. For frequent use, consider T-handle drivers for better torque control.
Finally, invest in a quality ratcheting screwdriver with interchangeable bits. It saves time on repetitive assemblies. Keep bits organized and replace worn ones immediately—a dull tip is a safety hazard.
