How Bore Gauges Accurately Measure Internal Diameters
Bore gauges measure internal diameters by using a contact probe that expands to touch the walls of a hole. The gauge compares this measurement to a calibrated standard, such as a ring gauge or micrometer. The difference is displayed on a dial indicator or digital readout, giving the actual diameter.
To use a bore gauge correctly, first zero it with a master ring of known size. Insert the gauge into the bore and gently rock it back and forth. The true diameter is found at the minimum reading on the indicator, which corresponds to the point where the probe contacts the bore at its widest point. This technique compensates for slight ovality or taper.
Accuracy depends on proper technique and environmental factors. Ensure the gauge and workpiece are at the same temperature to avoid thermal expansion errors. Clean surfaces are essential to prevent debris from affecting the reading. For deep or small bores, choose a gauge with appropriate range and contact style.
Regular calibration against certified masters is necessary to maintain measurement integrity. With practice, bore gauges provide reliable, repeatable measurements for tight tolerances critical in manufacturing.
