When performing precision shaft alignment, the dial indicator is your primary tool. Not all indicators are equal for this task. The three key factors are range, resolution, and mounting.

Range: Choose indicators with 0.25 to 0.5 inch travel. Too much range reduces resolution; too little requires frequent resetting. Standard 0.001 inch resolution works for most applications, but for high-precision work, 0.0005 inch is better.

Mounting: A rigid magnetic base with fine adjustment is critical. Ensure the rod is at least 3/8 inch diameter to resist sag. Use extension arms cautiously as they amplify errors. Check stem smoothness and zero repeatability.

Features: Contoured bezels help with angled readings. Some prefer balanced dials for easy averaging. Avoid plastic gears; choose jeweled movements for durability. While digital indicators offer ease of reading, analog dials are preferred for dynamic measurements during rotation.

Finally, verify calibration before each use. A simple check against a known thickness can catch errors. Investing in quality tools like Mitutoyo or Interapid pays off in alignment accuracy and reduces rework.
