Selecting the Right Clutch or Brake for Your System
Start by defining your system's torque requirements: static, dynamic, and peak loads. Also note the speed range and whether the clutch/brake will engage at rest or during motion. Thermal capacity is critical—repeated high-energy stops generate heat that must be dissipated or the unit will fail.
Friction clutches/brakes are cost-effective for moderate speeds and can be dry or wet. Electromagnetic units offer faster response and precise control, but require careful cooling. Overload protection might demand a slip clutch, while precise positioning often calls for a servo-rated brake.
Consider the duty cycle: frequent cycling reduces life. Look at the manufacturer's thermal horsepower rating and check if the unit can handle the expected number of engagements per hour. Also note environmental factors like moisture, dust, or temperature extremes.
Finally, validate with a prototype if possible. Always match the brake or clutch to the motor's torque and inertia, and ensure the mounting and shaft connections are properly sized.
