Mastering G2 Continuity in CAD Surfacing
When transitioning between two surfaces, aim for at least G2 (curvature continuous) instead of G1 (tangent). G2 ensures reflections flow smoothly, avoiding visible creases. Use boundary surface or sweep with curvature alignment.
Start by creating two base surfaces with a gap. Build a bridge surface using the edges, then set the edge constraints to curvature and tangency. Adjust the shape by modifying control points or adding internal curves to maintain smoothness.
Test your transition with a zebra stripe analysis. If stripes bend sharply, increase the surface degree or add more sections. Avoid abrupt changes in curvature by using gradual blends like variable fillets or loft with multiple profiles.
Remember, clean topology and avoiding tiny or degenerate faces make surfacing easier. Keep your surface patches simple and symmetric where possible.
