Budget CNC Conversion: Stepper Motors and Lost Motion
Converting a manual mill or lathe to CNC on a budget starts with stepper motors and a simple controller like an Arduino running GRBL or a parallel port breakout board with Mach3. The biggest mechanical challenge is backlash in the leadscrew nuts. A cheap fix is to add a second nut preloaded with a spring to take up slack. This reduces lost motion to under 0.005 inches without a ball screw.
Flexible beam couplings are essential for connecting the stepper to the leadscrew. They tolerate minor misalignment and prevent excessive load on the motor bearings. Use two couplings with a short shaft if the motor and screw are far apart. Avoid rigid couplers unless you have precision alignment.
Source NEMA 23 steppers and TB6600 drivers on eBay for under $50 each. Make motor mounting plates from 6061 aluminum plate cut on a bandsaw and drilled. A 3D printed bracket works for light duty but metal is better for rigidity.
Start with one axis to learn the wiring and software before tackling the whole machine. A single-axis conversion costs about $150 and teaches all the fundamentals. Once you prove the concept, scale up. The result is a functional CNC for under $500 that cuts aluminum and steel with patience.
