Three Simple Weekend Projects for Beginner Mechanical Hobbyists

Starting out in mechanical hobbies can be overwhelming, but a few focused weekend projects build confidence and skills. Here are three hands-on ideas that require minimal tools and materials.

First, build a simple C-clamp from scrap steel bar. Cut a U-shape, drill and tap one leg for a threaded rod, and weld a handle. This teaches layout, drilling, tapping, and welding basics, giving you a useful shop tool.

Second, forge a brass hammer. Using a brass rod and a mild steel handle, heat and shape the head on an anvil, then peen it onto the handle. This project covers heat treating, forging, and assembly—core blacksmithing skills.
