Spindle Speed and Feed Rate: The Perfect Cut
Spindle speed (RPM) and feed rate (IPM) are two sides of the same coin. They work together to control the chipload, or the amount of material each tooth removes per revolution. Getting this balance right is the key to efficient cutting, good surface finish, and long tool life.
Start with your tool manufacturer's recommended chipload. This gives you a target. From there, calculate feed rate: Feed (IPM) = RPM x number of flutes x chipload. If you increase RPM without adjusting feed, chipload drops, causing rubbing instead of cutting. That heats up the tool and dulls it fast. Conversely, too much feed at low RPM overloads the tool.
A practical approach: set your RPM based on tool diameter and material using standard speed formulas. Then compute the feed to hit the target chipload. Make a test cut. If you see built-up edge or poor finish, reduce feed or increase speed. If you hear chatter or see deflection, increase speed or reduce feed.
Remember, these adjustments are interdependent. A 10% change in speed often needs a matching feed adjustment to keep chipload constant. Learn to feel and hear the cut. A steady hum with consistent chip formation means you're in the sweet spot. Fine-tune from there, and you'll maximize tool life and part quality.
