Three steps for cleaner STEP file exports

When sending STEP files to suppliers, small mistakes can cause delays. The most common issues are mismatched units, missing reference geometry, and excessive file size. Here is a quick three-step routine to avoid these problems.

First, always export with millimeters as the unit. Many CAD systems default to inches, and a mismatch can lead to parts being scaled incorrectly. Set your export options to millimeters before generating the STEP file.

Second, include a clean coordinate system and origin point. Suppliers often use your coordinate system for fixture setup or inspection. Remove unnecessary planes and axes, but keep the main coordinate system clearly defined.

Third, simplify the model before export. Suppress cosmetic threads, small fillets, and internal features that are not critical for manufacturing. This reduces file size and confusion, making it easier for the supplier to focus on the key geometry.
