Brushed vs Brushless DC Motors for Robotics
Brushed DC motors use brushes and a commutator to deliver current to the rotor, making them simple and inexpensive. Brushless DC motors rely on electronic commutation via a controller, which increases efficiency and lifespan by eliminating mechanical wear.
In robotics, brushed motors are easy to drive with basic PWM signals and offer high starting torque, but their brushes degrade over time, limiting continuous operation. Brushless motors provide smoother torque delivery, better heat dissipation, and higher power density, though they require an electronic speed controller for operation.
Cost is a major factor. Brushed motors are cheaper upfront, ideal for budget prototypes or low-duty cycles. Brushless motors have a higher initial cost but lower maintenance, making them cost-effective for robots that run for long periods or need precise speed control.
For small, simple robots like line followers or basic manipulators, brushed motors often suffice. For drones, robotic arms, or any application demanding high efficiency, smooth control, and long life, brushless is the clear choice. Always match motor type to your load and runtime requirements.
