Three Simple Upgrades to Extend DIY Mechanism Life

DIY mechanisms often fail prematurely due to friction, corrosion, or fatigue. But a few low-cost upgrades can dramatically improve their lifespan and reliability.

First, replace plain drilled holes with press-fit brass or oil-impregnated bronze bushings. These bushings handle loads better, reduce shaft wear, and prevent slop over time. Simply ream the hole to size and press them in.

Second, add grease zerks or oil ports to any moving joints. A quick shot of grease every few months flushes out debris and prevents metal-on-metal contact. This simple maintenance step keeps mechanisms running smoothly for years.

Third, use stainless steel or zinc-plated fasteners instead of plain steel. They resist rust and galling, making disassembly for future repairs or adjustments much easier.
