Thread Milling vs Tapping: Which to Choose?
When creating internal threads, the choice between thread milling and tapping affects cycle time, tool life, and thread quality. Tapping is the classic method using a tap to cut threads in a pre-drilled hole. It's fast and simple for through holes, but limited by thread size and material.
Thread milling uses a rotating cutter that helically interpolates to form the thread. This offers more flexibility: one tool can cut multiple thread sizes and pitches. It handles hard materials better, and produces less burrs. Thread milling also allows for full thread depth control and can cut both right and left-hand threads without changing tools.
Tapping struggles with blind holes due to chip evacuation, while thread milling excels there. However, thread milling requires CNC interpolation and may be slower for high-volume production. Tap breakage is a common issue, especially in tough materials, whereas thread milling tools are less prone to catastrophic failure.
For low-volume, custom, or difficult materials, thread milling wins. For high-volume, standard threads in easy materials, tapping is more economical. Consider your production volume, material, and machine capability to make the right choice.
