Draft Angle Design for Injection Molded Parts
When modeling injection molded parts in CAD, one of the most overlooked details is the draft angle. Without draft on vertical surfaces, your part will stick to the mold core and cause ejection failures. A rule of thumb is 1 to 2 degrees per side for most materials.
For textured surfaces, increase draft to 3 to 5 degrees to prevent drag marks. Always apply draft in the direction of mold pull. Use the draft analysis tool in your CAD software to visualize areas that might need more angle.
Remember that sharp internal corners create stress concentration and difficult filling. Add fillets with radius at least 25% of the wall thickness. This improves flow and strength. Keep wall thickness uniform to avoid sink marks and warpage.
By following these guidelines, you reduce mold revisions and production defects. Adjust draft for material shrinkage and part geometry. Test early with prototyping simulation.
