Quick Stress Checks Using CAD Simulation Tools
Many engineers skip simulation because they think it takes too long or requires specialized software. But modern CAD packages like SolidWorks Simulation or Fusion 360 have built-in FEA that lets you run a quick stress check while you design. This can catch obvious failures before you even make a prototype.
Start by simplifying your model. Remove small features like fillets or holes that don’t affect the overall stress pattern. Then set up your study: apply constraints where the part is held in place, add expected loads, and choose a coarse mesh for speed. Run the analysis and look at the Von Mises stress distribution.
Pay attention to the factor of safety. If it’s below 1, the part will likely fail. If it’s above 3, you might be overdesigning. Use the results to guide geometry changes—add ribs where stress is high, remove material where it’s low. You can run a new analysis in minutes.
Keep in mind that these tools are for quick checks, not final certifications. Validate critical results with hand calculations or more detailed FEA. Used wisely, CAD simulation saves time and reduces costly redesigns.
