Why Bolt Grade Matters More Than You Think
Many engineers treat bolt grade as an afterthought, assuming any bolt will do. That assumption can lead to catastrophic failures. The grade determines the bolt's yield strength, tensile strength, and ductility. Using a lower grade than specified compromises the joint's ability to carry load.
Consider a bolted flange in a pressure vessel. If you replace a Grade 8 bolt with a Grade 5, the yield strength drops from 120 ksi to 92 ksi. That 23% reduction may seem minor, but under cyclic loading, it accelerates fatigue failure. I've seen a shear failure in a lifting lug because someone grabbed a common Grade 2 bolt instead of the specified Grade 8.
The fix is simple: always verify the grade marks on bolt heads. For structural or safety-critical joints, stick to the engineering spec. Grade matters because it's a direct measure of the bolt's strength. Don't let convenience compromise safety.
