Choose the Right Clamp for Secure Workholding
The most common mistake in workholding is using a clamp that applies force in the wrong direction. A clamp should press the workpiece down against the machine table or fixture, not just push it sideways. If the clamping force vector does not have a strong downward component, the part can lift during cutting.
Consider the part geometry and the cutting forces. For thin-walled parts, use multiple low-force clamps to distribute load and prevent distortion. For heavy roughing, choose toggle clamps or hydraulic clamps that provide high clamping force with consistent pressure. Always ensure the clamp's contact point is directly over a solid support, not over a gap.
Remember that the clamp's stroke and handle clearance matter in tight setups. Use step blocks and heel straps to adjust height and avoid interfering with the cutter. For 5-axis work, consider zero-point clamping systems that allow quick changeover while maintaining repeatability. Testing the setup with a lighter cut before full production can save scrap parts.
The key is to match the clamp type to the operation. A simple screw clamp works for light drilling, but a swing clamp or edge clamp suits milling with heavy side loads. Investing in the right clamp for each job reduces vibration, improves part accuracy, and extends tool life.
