For low-load applications, engineers often overlook bearing selection because loads are minimal. However, the wrong choice can lead to premature failure or excessive cost. The key is to prioritize speed, lubrication, and mounting over load capacity.

Consider using deep groove ball bearings as a default. They handle both radial and axial loads well, have low friction, and are widely available. For very low loads, open or shielded versions are fine; sealed bearings add unnecessary torque.

Pay attention to cage material. Polyamide cages are lightweight and operate quietly, ideal for low-load, high-speed scenarios. Avoid steel cages as they add inertia and can cause noise.

Lubrication matters most in low-load applications. Use a low-viscosity grease to reduce starting torque. If speeds exceed 3000 RPM, consider oil mist lubrication to prevent heat buildup.

Mounting is critical. Light loads require precise alignment; misalignment causes edge loading that quickly ruins the bearing. Use tolerance rings or flexible housings to accommodate slight misalignments without over-constraining the shaft.
