Designing parts with self-locating features is one of the simplest ways to cut assembly time. Features like chamfers, ribs, or alignment pins guide components into place automatically, reducing the need for manual adjustments and specialized fixtures.

For example, consider a bracket that must be bolted to a baseplate. Instead of relying on the operator to align holes by eye, add two small tapered pegs to the base and matching recesses in the bracket. The pegs self-center the bracket as it’s lowered, so bolts drop right in.
