3 Key Factors for Choosing Hydraulic Fittings
Choosing the wrong hydraulic fitting leads to leaks, downtime, or even catastrophic failure. Three factors always drive the decision: pressure rating, material compatibility, and seal type.
First, match the fitting's pressure rating to your system's maximum working pressure. Always apply a safety factor of at least 4:1. For example, if your system runs at 3000 psi, use fittings rated for 12,000 psi or more. Never exceed the rated pressure.
Second, select material based on the fluid. Steel is standard for high-pressure mineral oil. Stainless steel resists corrosion from water-glycol or phosphate esters. Brass works for low-pressure or pneumatic systems but cannot handle high impact or vibration.
Third, choose the seal type. O-ring face seal (ORFS) provides excellent leak resistance under high pressure and impulse. 37° flare (JIC) is common for general hydraulic lines. For extreme vibration, consider a flareless bite-type fitting. Ensure thread standards match your ports—mixing NPT, BSP, or SAE threads will cause leaks.
Finally, inspect each fitting for cracks, burrs, or damaged threads before installation. A simple check now saves hours of troubleshooting later.
