Overcoming Backlash in Compact Robotic Gearboxes
In compact robotics, space constraints often force the use of small planetary gearboxes. These gearboxes, while efficient, suffer from inherent backlash that can ruin positioning accuracy in precision tasks like pick-and-place or camera gimbals.
Backlash causes a dead zone in motion control, leading to oscillation and repeatability errors. For sub-degree accuracy, even a few arc-minutes of backlash is unacceptable.
For zero backlash, consider harmonic or cycloidal drives, but these are expensive and complex. A cost-effective alternative is to preload two motors against each other or use spring-loaded antibacklash gears on the output stage.
For DIY builders, switching to a serrated belt drive with proper tensioning can virtually eliminate backlash while absorbing shock loads. Always measure backlash with a dial indicator and compensate in software by always approaching from the same direction.
