Match Welding Process to Metal Type
Selection of welding process depends heavily on the metal's conductivity, melting point, and reactivity. For aluminum, use TIG or MIG with AC current to break the oxide layer. Steel is forgiving; stick welding works for thick sections, while MIG is faster for thin gauge.
Stainless steel requires low heat input to avoid carbide precipitation. TIG with a filler rod matching grade works best. For copper, high thermal conductivity demands preheating and high heat input; use gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) with DCEN.
Titanium needs inert gas shielding from both front and back; TIG with pure argon is standard. Magnesium is prone to cracking; use TIG with AC and specialized filler. Always clean surfaces thoroughly and match filler metal to base metal for strength and corrosion resistance.
