Reduce Friction in DIY Sliding Mechanisms with PTFE Tape

One of the simplest ways to reduce friction in a DIY sliding mechanism is to use PTFE tape. Commonly known as plumber's tape, it's cheap, easy to apply, and has a very low coefficient of friction. Just wrap a thin layer around the sliding surfaces, like rods or rails, before assembly.

For best results, ensure the surfaces are clean and dry first. Apply the tape with slight tension to avoid wrinkles, and trim any excess. Overlapping by about 50% is fine. The tape will reduce stick-slip and allow smoother motion, especially in low-load applications like drawer slides or linear guides.

Don't forget to also align your components properly – misalignment causes binding and increases friction. Use a lubricant like silicone spray or light machine oil on the tape for even lower friction. For high loads, consider using PTFE sheet or filled nylon instead.

Finally, smooth out any rough spots on the sliding surfaces with sandpaper or a file before applying tape. This combined approach will give you a near-frictionless movement without spending much money or time.
