How Anodizing Protects and Colors Aluminum Parts
Anodizing is an electrochemical process that thickens the natural oxide layer on aluminum. The part is submerged in an acid bath and electric current is applied, creating a porous oxide coating that is hard and durable.
The porous structure is key for coloring. Dye molecules are absorbed into the pores. After dyeing, the part is sealed in hot water or steam, closing the pores and locking in the color, making it fade-resistant.
The anodized layer is integrated with the aluminum, so it won't peel or chip. It provides excellent corrosion protection and is non-conductive. Wear resistance is also improved.
Practical tip: For best results, ensure parts are clean and free of oils before anodizing. Masking can be used to keep certain areas uncoated. Anodizing is ideal for architectural, automotive, and consumer goods.
