PLA prototype cracking around threaded inserts

I'm having issues with my PLA prototype. I designed holes for M3 threaded inserts and used a soldering iron to install them. The inserts go in fine, but after a few days the plastic around them develops cracks. I tried slowing down the installation and using lower temperatures, but the cracking persists.

Is there a better method or material choice to prevent this?
