A crystal oscillator may be one of the smallest parts on a PCB, but it controls timing for the entire system.
Long traces, nearby noise sources, and poor grounding can affect clock stability.
Keeping the crystal close to the MCU and following layout recommendations from the datasheet can prevent many unexpected problems.
