Every decision in medical device design is driven by four non-negotiable requirements: biocompatibility, cleanability, tolerance, and traceability. These constraints apply to material selection, geometry, and manufacturing process from day one.

Biocompatibility means materials must not harm the patient. This eliminates many common adhesives, coatings, and lubricants, forcing engineers to specify only ISO 10993-tested materials. It also affects surface finishes and any long-term wear or degradation.

Cleanability requires that every surface be free of crevices, pits, or dead zones where bioburden can hide. Rounded corners, polished finishes, and minimal joint lines are essential. This directly influences how you design openings, snap-fits, and internal channels.

Tolerance and traceability: Medical devices demand tight tolerances for fit and function, often with statistical process control. Every part must be traceable to its material batch and production lot, so you must design for laser marking or embedded RFID. These constraints force you to rethink conventional fasteners, assemblies, and inspection plans, but they ensure patient safety and regulatory compliance.
