A deep pocket looks simple in CAD.

A rectangle.
A depth value.
A few corner radii.

But from a CNC machining perspective, depth changes everything.

As tool length increases:

Tool rigidity decreases.

Deflection increases.

Vibration becomes harder to control.

Surface finish becomes less predictable.

For aluminum parts, engineers often underestimate this because aluminum is easy to cut.

But a long-reach tool can still create problems:

  • Chatter marks on walls
  • Uneven corner accuracy
  • Poor surface finish
  • Longer cycle time

The solution is not always buying a stronger machine.

Sometimes the better solution starts in design:

Reducing pocket depth.
Adding access features.
Increasing corner radius.
Splitting manufacturing steps.

A good CNC design considers not only:

“Can the tool reach this area?”

but also:

“Can the tool remain stable while cutting this area?”

Accessibility and machinability are two different questions.
