Keep Exploded Views Clear with Straight-Line Paths

A common mistake in exploded views is moving parts along arbitrary curves or diagonals. This leaves readers guessing how pieces align. The fix is simple: move every part along a straight line from its assembled position, parallel to one of the three main axes.

When you restrict motion to X, Y, or Z, the viewer can easily trace each part back to its origin. In CAD, this also makes the view easier to create and adjust. Just use a linear constraint or drag along a specific direction.

For spacing, keep it consistent. Either use the same distance for all parts or scale the distance with part size. Small parts should not fly far off while large parts barely move. A good rule is to set a gap roughly equal to ten percent of the part's largest dimension.

Finally, test your exploded view on someone unfamiliar with the assembly. If they can quickly see the order and direction of assembly, you have succeeded. If they hesitate, simplify the paths or adjust the spacing until the motion reads clearly.
