To get precise layout lines with a height gauge, start by seating a clean surface plate and wiping the gauge base with a lint-free cloth. Place the gauge on the plate and mount a sharp scriber in the holder, then gently lower the scriber until it just touches the reference surface. Lock the slide and zero the fine adjustment dial.

Next, calculate your target dimension and move the slide up by that amount using the coarse and fine adjustments. Always approach the final setting from below to keep backlash out of the system. Lock the slide securely without disturbing the setting.

Now scribe your line by standing directly in front of the gauge and drawing it across the part with steady, even pressure. Let the scriber do the work and avoid pressing hard, which can bend the scriber and distort the line. For critical work, check the setting with a height master or gauge blocks before scribing.

Finally, inspect the scribed line under a magnifying lens to confirm it is continuous and crisp. If it skips or looks ragged, resharpen the scriber or replace it. With a clean setup and careful technique, a height gauge can hold lines within a few tenths, making it a reliable tool for layout.
