A company can be ISO 9001 certified for management systems yet still have no oversight on the engineering design or material properties of the component you intend to buy. The certificate should list the specific product families or manufacturing processes covered.

Finally, do not rely solely on paperwork. For critical parts, arrange for a third-party inspection or request samples for your own testing. This is particularly important when the component will be used in a safety application or in different environmental conditions than the supplier's test.

Taking these steps costs time but prevents costly failures and potential liability later. Always match the physical evidence to the standard requirement, not just the supplier's marketing language.
