Choosing Linear Motion Components for Your Next Build
When choosing linear motion components, the first decision is usually the drive mechanism: ball screw or lead screw. Ball screws offer high efficiency and low backlash, ideal for rapid positioning and high accuracy. Lead screws are cheaper and quieter but have more friction and wear, suited for light duty or vertical applications with self-locking.
For the guiding system, compare linear ball bearings and roller guides. Ball bearings are compact and affordable for light loads and moderate speeds. Roller guides have higher rigidity and load capacity, better for heavy machining or impacts. Use roller guides when stiffness is critical, such as in CNC retrofits.
Also consider environmental factors. Chrome plated shafts resist corrosion but still need wipers. Stainless steel shafts are better for washdown areas. For dusty environments, choose cover strips or telescopic enclosures to keep chips out.
Finally, check axial stiffness and preload. Preloaded ball nuts eliminate play but increase drag. For high-speed positioning, low preload reduces heat. For manual adjustments, use a lead screw with an anti-backlash nut.
